GM-GMC: starter, fly wheel, torque converter

Question
I am working on a 1976 Chevy motorhome 350 w/350 trans. The starter will not engage or even touch the flywheel unless material is taken off the top of the starter. The old starter had been ground off with a grinder and the end housing finally failed. The torque converter and fly wheel appear new.  Is it possible the flywheel is incorrect.  How can I tell?  Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you Mike Marquette

Answer
That is a tough question.  There is obviously a mismatch, it is possible that the flywheel is slightly different but it can't be too different, there really isn't that much room to fit in there.  My recommendation would be to try to find a shop that specializes in rebuilding starters and alternators, they may be able to help you out if you bring in the old starter so they have something to go by.  Unfortuneatly it seems you have a customized set up and all logic goes out the window, you just need something to fit and work.  (Most) parts stores have young guys behind the counter that don't have a lot of on car experience and consequently can't help in situations like this.  Try the starter/alternator shop and see what you can come up with.
Hope this helps
