Hyundai Repair: Timin belt tensioner, timing belt tensioner, tension gauge

Question
Had a bloke to come out to replace a timing belt on a Hyundai Lantra 1993 1.8L.Twin Cam. He has told me i need a new timing belt tensioner and that it is tensioned by oil pressure. I have taken this tensioner off and it seems its a spring loaded piston like. Trying to explain the part. I dont know if there is a special name for this part because Im not sure the dealers know what I am talking about

                                     Regards

Answer
ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT TENSION CHECK -- 1.6L, 1.8L & 2.4L

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Accessory Drive Belt Tension Check -- 1.6L, 1.8L And 2.4L
Compressor Drive Belt

Satisfactory performance of the air conditioning system is dependent upon drive belt condition and tension. If the proper tensions are not maintained, belt slippage will greatly reduce air conditioning performance and drive belt life. To avoid such adverse effects, the following service procedure should be followed.

Any belt that has operated for a minimum of one half-hour is considered to be a "used" belt. Adjust air conditioning drive belt at the time of new-car preparation.
Check drive belt tension at regular service intervals and adjust as needed.

1.6L, 1.8L

NEW
5-5.6 mm (0.2-0.22 in.)

USED
6-7 mm (0.23-0.27 in.)

V-Belt Type
V-Ribbed Type

Drive Belt Tension Adjustment

The belt must be adjusted to the following specifications.

When 100 N (22 lbs.) (tension or compression) is given perpendicularly to belt at center "A", sag is to be "L" mm.
Or, tension gauge must read "T" at center "A".

New belt installed
Used belt installed

Sag (L)
7.5-9.0 mm
(0.30-0.35 in.)
10.0 mm
(0.39 in.)

Tension (T)
50-70 kg
(110-154 lbs.)
40 kg
(88 lbs.)

Usage of Tension Gauge

Using Tension Gauge

BORROUGHS BT-33-73F Type
NIPPONDENSO BTG-2 Type

Measuring Method

Press down on the tension gauge handle and insert the belt between the spindle and hook of the gauge.
Release the handle and read the measurement on the gauge.

NOTE
Belt which had been in operation for 5 minutes or more, must be adjusted to the used belt specifications.
Ensure that the belt is installed correctly, as shown in the illustration.
A loose belt will produce a high-pitched squealing noise.
A belt that is too is tight will damage the alternator and water pump bearing.
