Hyundai Repair: Hyundai rear glass, blown fuses, heat vent

Question
Hi David
I am Patrick, and I own a 97 Elantra Sedan.
This morning on my way to work, I smelled something burning, and I was only a minute or 2 out of the driveway. I figured it couldn't be the engine, and it had more of an electrical scent than burning oil. I pulled over, and immediately heard a somewhat loud pop from the rear. I looked back, and my rear window had shattered, and there was about a 3"x1" hole, aligned vertically, in the glass. I am guessing that there was a short in the defogger. This glass was replaced about 2 years ago to the day, however that was for an impact. The car has had electical troubles since I bought it in 2000 (brakelights only seem to work 2 out of 3 at a time (left, right, center) lights behind the heat/vent controls out, radio lights out, but only 90% of the time, blown fuses, etc etc). So for the question(s): First off, do you think it is a more serious problem than perhaps just a scratch that allowed the condensation to short the defroster and blow the window? And secondly, being that I am a young, struggling student (without parental support), I would like to avoid having the glass professionally replaced. I found a price from a scrapyard of $100, but they do not install there. The last replacement cost me over $400 through a glass shop. I am mechanically  inclined, and I feel pretty confident I could do the job myself, but perhaps you could let me know of some pitfalls or risks, or even a short how-to of installing the glass myself.
I thank you in advance for any advice you can offer.
Patrick

Answer
personally I dont do glass work except on side windows it just isnt worth the effort. actually I have never had to replace a back glass with a defogger.so I am not sure how the connections are made back there.
If you call around and shop it you will these glass companies very competitive. shop around and dont be afraid to haggle with them.
