Jaguar Repair: XJ6 transmission filter, automatic transmission specialist, vanden plas

Question

New and old trans filt   Howard,

  Changed the transmission filter in my 84 vanden plas, noticed the old filter looks like it's missing the snorkel part.  Have a look at the photo, new and old filter.  Any idea what that filter is all about ?  Maybe it was the wrong one for the BW 66 ?  Anyway, I put the new one in, it fitted fine, flushed the transmission and the car seems to shift more smoothly now.

Hi Steve,

I have not done much automatic transmission work as all the dealerships I worked in, had a automatic transmission specialist or we would sub let that work to a transmission shop but I do have a factory service manual on the BW-66 and it shows the one on the left with the extension on it. The one on the right could be a aftermarket replacement. As long as the filter itself is there and seals ok, it may not matter which is used.
