Jaguar Repair: 1984 jag xxj6 fuel guage, haynes manual, fuel gauge

Question
Hello Sammie- my fuel gauge worked perfectly when I got the car 3 mo. ago. Now it only registers one eighth of an inch on each side when you switch from rt. to left or left to rt. There is obviously power there but it is not accurate . any suggestions?
Also- need to get a manual- which is the best (haynes?)

Answer
There may be a problem with the change-over switch. Sometime the switch does not make contact with the fuel level indicator or the fuel gauge. Changing the switch may or may not fix the problem. The problem may be in the connector which the switch plugs into. I have this same problem and I know what causes it.  I do not have a real Fix for this problem. Replacing the connector should fix the problem, however finding a replacement could be a problem. Sometime the fuel level indicators also go bad. As for the manuals, I have the Haynes manual but I can not say that it is the best. You would have to compare it with other manuals.  I hope that this helps. Sam
