Jaguar Repair: XJ6 Series 3 Horn sounds when I turn the steering wheel!!!, xj6 series, plastic nut

Question
QUESTION: Howdy Howard.
I just replaces my steering rack which ended up putting my steering wheel a full 180 degrees out and at the same time Horn sounds when I turn the steering wheel to the left. It's intermittent.
I removed the wheel and and put it back in the correct position on the spline but the horn problem persists.
Where do you suggest I start looking for the problem?
Kind regards
Michael

ANSWER: Hi Michael,

First disconnect the battery but be sure you have the code to enter so you can get the radio to work again.
It has been a long time since I did one but as I remember, rather then removing the rack again I loosened the steering column (don't remove the bolts all the way and you may need to remove the two lower column mounting screws) and remove the pinch bolt from the "U" joint at the firewall close to the floor and Pull the shaft out of the "U" joint and then center the front wheels (or remove the grease plug and insert at small rod to drop into the hole to center the rack)(if the toe-in was set correctly) With the "U" joint disengaged check the canceling of the turn signal to see that it is correct and then reconnect the shaft into the "U" joint and put the pinch bolt back in and tighten.

This most likely will not correct the horn so you need to look at that separately. When you finish the correction of the steering wheel centering, reconnect the battery and feed the code into the radio and test the turning of the wheel to see if the horn still blows. If so, remove the screws in the back of the steering wheel to remove the center pad. Then turn the wheel again to see if the horn still blows. At that point you should see a large white plastic nut with a metal connection in the center. You can unscrew that nut and extract the long tube and wire from the center of the steering shaft. As best I can remember there is a single wire plugged into the column further down the column. The horns are activated by grounding that single wire that grounds the horn relay. Somewhere in that series, you should find what is causing the problem. I don't remember what the slip ring looks like down in the column but if that is where the problem is I think you have to remove the whole upper column to gain access to it.

That's the best I can tell you.

Howard

QUESTION: OK I have the steering wheel in the correct position. All looks good and work well. Unfortunately, the horn honks in certain positions when I turn to the left. Where do I start looking for the horn problem?

Answer
Follow the second part of my answer and go a step at a time starting at the horn pad on the steering wheel by removing it to see if the horn still blows when turning left, then remove the large plastic nut and tube and try it again with that removed. I don't remember what the slip ring looks like further down but there is an access to it further down the column where the wire exits the column. You will need to look at it. As best as I can remember if the slip ring on the shaft is damaged you may have to remove the whole column to take it apart. It has been many years since I have been into one.
