Jaguar Repair: fuel return, return valve, electrical failure

Question
QUESTION: hi  me howard  on 85 xj6 i am gitting fire on both tank switch valvs at same time i have replace every switch gas return to both tanks what can it b///.

ANSWER: Hi James,

When you select the right tank you should have power to BOTH return valves and when you select the left tank you should have NO power to either valve. The right return valve is a normally closed valve and when it is powered it opens. The left return valve it normally open and when you supply power to it, then it closes.

The reason for this is so that if you have an electrical failure in either or both valves, you can always operate off of the left tank. (The tank switching valve in the trunk is normally open to the left tank and when power is applied it switches to the right tank)

This does not account for a stuck valve.

QUESTION: mr howard what i have is when switch is out gas return to both tanfs when it in it return to rt/// tank.

Answer
James, I just told you how the system is suppose to work. Write it down or copy it so you can check the system.

If you have the right tank selected.

Power is supplied to the tank switching valve in the trunk. (opens the right tank and closes the left tank.

Power is supplied to the right return valve. (opens the right return valve)

Power is supplied to the left return valve. (closes the left return valve)

When you select the left tank.

No power it supplied to the tank switching valve in the trunk. (this opens the left tank and closes the right tank)

No power is supplied to the right return valve. (this closes the right return valve)

No power is supplied to the left return valve. (this opens the left return valve)

The right and left return valves look alike but are not. They work backwards from each other.
