Jaguar Repair: Hag X-Type 2001 Gearbox auto trasnmission problem, automatic transmission specialist, automatic transmission repair

Question
My 2001 X type 3.0 SE has done 115,000 great car until now!
gearbox won't go past 3rd and I have to stay in the manual gear selectors once I have got going. Jag Garage have diagnosed a 734 error and say I have change the gear box for £4.5K - I have carried out some research and the following I have read - could this be a cheper solution than changin a whole gearbox? Also where best to get the parts. Mentioned - Your gidance will be much appreciated.

This is what I picked up off the web:
If you are experiencing 5R55N tranny problems with missing 4 or 5th gear and/or C-solenoid problems with 734 and/or 735 error codes - the problem is the valve 4-3 spring (sonnax code: 56947J-S1) and it costs less than $10.

It can be replaced without removing tranny...all you will need is to drain the oil, remove the pre-stroke valve and replace the spring..

You may also need to replace gasket and oil filter.

Best regards

Answer
Hi Tim,

My Jaguar experience was from 1960 up to the 1987 models so I have no experience on the "X" Type other then I sat in one once and was pleasantly surprised at the driver's room.

However, I can tell you that the "Codes" system was designed for a dealership mechanic in a warranty situation and as you have experienced may do not give the mechanic a detailed diagnosis of a problem. I worked in several Jaguar dealerships over the years and most didn't do their own automatic transmission work. We just removed the trans and sent it to a transmission shop for any internal repairs. Automatic transmission repair is a field in itself and many auto repair shops sublet their automatic trans work. Some do have a specialist in their shop and can diagnose and repair internal problems.

If I were in your position, I would approach that Jag dealer and ask if they had a automatic transmission specialist or do they sublet that work. If they have a specialist ask if you could talk to him. Keep in mind that any time you approach a large money eating monster (like most dealerships of any brand of car) sugar will get you much more desired results then salt. If they have one and will allow you to talk to him show him what you found on the net to see if he thinks that it would apply to your car. AND even if he is not sure ask how much it would cost for him to try it. KEEP IN MIND THAT WHEN YOU REQUEST A SPECIFIC PROCEDURE TO BE DONE AND IT DON'T FIX THE PROBLEM, IT IS ON YOUR NICKLE. If the price is not too high it might be a worth wile gamble as opposed to forking over 4.5 K

If they don't have a specialist or will not let you talk to him, I would walk away and find a automatic transmission specialist and show the details you found on the net to see if they would attempt a repair on that diagnosis. But any shop of any kind will charge you weather it fixes the car or not WHEN YOU SHOW UP WITH YOUR DIAGNOSIS.

Good luck,

Howard
