Jaguar Repair: 84 XJ6 loss of power, continued - NOW A/C, compressor clutch, compressor side

Question
Howard,
Thanks again so much for guiding me through getting the '84 XJ6 not only running, but running well! I passed emissions testing on the first try yesterday with some of the lowest numbers I have ever seen. Now, for the A/C. When I select a low temp and fan speed via the dash controls, the electric fan kicks on, but not the compressor clutch. I ran a 12V+ wire directly to the compressor side of the fused connection tight at the compressor and was able to activate the clutch momentarily, but I did not run it long in case it is out of lubricant/refrigerant. This car does not appear to have been retro-fitted, so I at this point wonder if the system is low or out of refrigerant and a low pressure switch is preventing the compressor from clutching on. Am I on the right track? For the cost of a retro fit kit, is it worth it to fit and refill, or do you have a set of tests to recommend?
Thanks,
Michael

Answer
Glad you got it running ok.

Bypassing the system to activate the clutch only tests the clutch. You need to test the pressure, then do a leak test. DON'T use 134, only use either R-12 or one of the propane based refrigerants. don't know what kit you are talking about. If it replaces the compressor that would be a good idea as the original Harrison compressor was junk.
It is usually the first thing to die on these cars.
