Jaguar Repair: car ramps, power steering fluid leak, quick lube shops

Question
Howard,
Is it possible to use car ramps for my 85 xj6. I have heard both good and bad about them. I need to get underneath to check for a power steering fluid leak.

Thanks,
Niki

Answer
Hi Niki,

Most of the car ramps I have seen and have are not strong enough to handle a XJ-6 Jag. I sure would not get under a jag on car ramps!!! I know it is more expensive to go buy a floor jack and jack stands but if you intend to own cars the rest of your life you will get the use of them. If you can't afford them now just go to one of those quick lube shops when you need to change your oil and ask them to look at and maybe let you look at the rack leak.

I drive an 83 XJ-6 and had a Rack start leaking on my car over a year ago and I had a used rack so I ordered a kit to rebuild it and in the mean time I put Lucas stop leak in the one still on the car and when I finished building the extra rack the leak had stopped and my fresh rebuilt rack is still sitting on the shelf waiting for the rack on the car to start leaking again. (almost two years# I am not an agent for Lucas #not the electrical components company)and I have no way to know if that stuff will help your car as it did mine but it is a small price and so what! The rack needs to be rebuilt anyway. (if it is the rack and not just a line leak)
