Jaguar Repair: Window Switches, lucas switches, jaguar community

Question
Hi Howard,
I am replacing all of the window switches in my 85 XJ6.  I have had so many problems, and it seems like cleaning the switches does not last very long.  In any event, the new Lucas switches are about $20 each.  Also, there are aftermarket switches about the same price.  Which would be better for reliability?  I just don't want to keep going in there every month to service these crazy switches!  Thank you for your kind service to the Jaguar community.

Answer
Hi Rich,
I have never tried the aftermarket switches. I always just cleaned the old switches but I got several years use on my two XJ-6s and never had a customer come back on the ones I cleaned for others. This makes me think something else is wrong with your car. Did you check the charge rate of the alternator and are you using a "Deep Charge" battery (diesel or marine battery) as you should be? The charge rate should not be over 14.5 at 2000 RPM. Do you keep the glass runners lubed with Silicone spray?
