Jaguar Repair: 87 XJS 5.3 hess & Eisnhardt, fuel pressure gauge, expansion tank

Question
Started stalling, now runs for ten seconds, pump not running, remover and tested, pump runs but not sure of pressure.  Pump did not run at all when key initially turned on.  How can I test for fuel line blockage? smelled stagnant gas when pump removed,,what is the small holding tank under right side of battery box line go into?  Seemed empty..Was running great last two summers...and diagrams would be helpful..thanx Lee

Answer
Hi Lee,
There are three diagrams of the fuel pump system with minor differences so I need a Vin # to get you a diagram.

I believe the tank you are talking about is an expansion tank, not a holding tank.

As with all injection systems you need to know what the fuel pressure is to diagnose any problems in injection. You will need to install a "T" in the fuel line just before the fuel rail and install a fuel pressure gauge. You need 30 to 35 PSI at the rail.

You can activate the fuel pump by jumping the pin #30 relay socket and # 87 pin socket for a test. First confirm that #30 is powered.
The pump relay is the forward of the two relays at the ECU in the right side of the trunk area.
