Jaguar Repair: Radio Problems-85 XJ6 Series III, sony head unit, 1985 jaguar xj6

Question
QUESTION: Hi Howard,
I recently replaced the factory speakers with new Infinti speakers.  I also took out the factory head unit and replaced it with a new Sony head unit.  It work fine for a few minutes but then shut off and wouldn't come back on, as we were trying to fit it inside the radio hole.  The head unit has been tested at Best Buy and it works fine, I have also tested the yellow and red power cables coming from the car to the stereo and before they had power, now they don't...

Is there an inline fuse or something that I'm missing?

What else do you suggest?

Also, what brake fluid type does the series III 1985 Jaguar XJ6 use?

Thanks in advance for your help!

ANSWER: Hi Blake,
There were several different radio wiring systems used on the Ser III so I will need to know if you have a radio relay in the console. Both systems used two in-line fuses, one in the console and one in with the radio or in the forward part of the console. The only system I see that used a yellow wire had it run between the radio relay and the suppressor and on to the radio plug.

That system used an in-line 20a fuse by a brown wire to the 30/51 pin on the radio relay with a red wire on that same pin going to another in-line fuse (2a) by a red wire to that radio plug.
You should be able to locate both by following the brown wire and the red wire off of the relay. However if the red has power you need not check further because the 20a on the brown wire is what feeds the red 2a fuse. There are two other light powers (slate and a red w/white tracer)with no in-line fuses. If you want this diagram let me know and I will put it up on my web site for you to copy.

QUESTION: Hi Howard,
Thanks for getting back with me.

The radio connector does have a yellow wire, it was the hot wire for my radio.  The red wire was the ACC, they both worked and not they both have no power.  How hard is it to get to the relays/fuses?  Could you put the wiring diagram on your website, I need the link...

Thanks again for your help!

Answer
To access the relay and fuses, remove the center console arm rest lid and the plastic inner tray. This gives you access to the window switch plugs. Remove all of the plug connectors and lift the console tray up to gain access to the second fuse (20a) If the relay is far enough back that you can access it under the arm rest tray, you may not need to remove all of the switch connectors and the forward tray because you can just check for power on the brown wire to tell if the 20a fuse is good.

Let me know how you make out with it.
