Jeep Repair: transmission shifting problems, jeep grand cherokee laredo, grand cherokee laredo

Question
QUESTION: Hello any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. I have 2002 jeep grand cherokee laredo with auto transmission six cylinder engine. Just the other day the transmission would not shift it felt like it was stuck in low gear. I did all the usual things checked the fluid, checked for leaks, looked for anything out of place nothing seemed wrong, took the car in for a diagnostic scan no codes present and other than an oxygen sensor needing to be replaced all was fine. Next step was local tranny shop anadjustment was made under the hood on a cable that connects to the gas pedal now transmission will shift but only after rpm goes to 4000 to 4500 rpm which I think is too high. Is the another adjustment that can be made. I only have 82500 miles on the vehicle and think the mileage is to low for the unit to be replaced. I called jeep and got the usual nonsense answers. If you need to ask me any questions feel free to do so as I may have left something out. Thank you for any help you can give me on this problem

ANSWER: First, I'd bring the car back to the tranny shop and have them recheck the adjustment they made. You paid them to do a job and they apparently failed to verify that they addressed and repaired your concern. Something as simple as taking the car for a test drive would have would have shown that the repair didn't fix the car. Keep in mind that there may be additional concerns in the transmission. Low fluid pressure in the transmission would be the first thing I'd suspect. It could be caused by nothing more than a plugged filter but could also be an indication that the transmission has some internal damage. The only way to find out is to change the filter and then perform a pressure test on the transmissions fluid circuits. Hope this helps

QUESTION: I forgot to mention that needs an upstream oxygen sensor. Can a bad oxygen sensor also cause shifting problems. I am going to do a fluid and filter change to see if that stops the problem. My gut feeling is that's its an electrical problem but all the shops just want to change the transmission and that is more money than I want to spend on a car with so many issues. Thanks for the fast replies and honest answers.

Answer
You're Welcome. And Thank You. Changing the Oxygen Sensor will help how the car runs and improve your gas mileage but it will have no affect on the transmission concern. The transmission in your vehicle has very few electrical components. They control the torque converter, Overdrive and modify the shift points to some extent. So with that said, I don't believe you have an electrical problem on your hands.
