Jeep Repair: AC Condenser Hose, ac condenser, rush job

Question
Hi Kevin,

A month or so ago the AC in our 2000 Jeep GCL began working erratically and made a lot of noise.  The dealer replaced the compressor.  It was a rush job as we needed the car for a road trip.  Picked it up, and to our astonishment, the AC did not really work.  Minimal cool air.  Called the dealer enroute (we thought it needed time to kick in and waited until we were on the road) and complained and they said that they tested it and it was fine.  Well, it flat doesn't work in hot weather.  The AC works only if the car has been sitting in the garage.  If it sits outdoors in the heat/sun it doesn't work.  So back to the dealer.  A mechanic checked it out and said he could smell freon, we had a leak, and that the line was cracked from the condenser.  He said we could not replace the line, that it was attached, and we had to replace the whole thing.  Then when we call back (our extended warranty does not cover lines) the supervisor says this is not true, and that we can replace just the line and contradicted the mechanic.  But just replacing the line is hundreds of $.  So my questions are:  Should they not have noticed this when replacing the compressor?  Would it have been cheaper in terms of labor if they had replaced the line then?  Is it true that the line can be changed without changing the condenser?  It looks like it comes straight out of the top of the thing and I cannot see how they are separate.

Thanks!

Answer
well  as for as the leak  U said your self u were in a  rush  so the correct measure to see if there was anything else wrong that would cause the compressor to be noisy  which a leak and all the oil coming out would cause this. So based off that and u guys were in a rush  there would not be much to that story. AS for the condensor what engine size do u have and I will look for myself tomorrow when i get to work.
