Jeep Repair: loud fuel pump, surging, jeep cherokee laredo, loud buzz

Question
Hey Nathan, I have a 1991 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4.0L 4WD. The vehicle set up for 3 years before I purchased it. We replaced the fuel pump and a few other items to get it back on the road. After the engine reaches normal operating temperature the fuel pump goes from the normal high pitched buzz to a very loud buzz with the occasional grinding noise and upon any attempts to accelerate the vehicle surges violently. It will accelerate however if only mild to moderate pressure is applied to the pedal. If I turn the engine off and then restart it the fuel pump is back to making the normal operating buzz and no surging until after about 5 minutes. My catalytic converter also smokes from under the vehicle. Do you think the converter is clogged so badly it is choking the engine and causing the pump to work extra hard or do you think it is simply just a clogged fuel filter which I also replaced before getting it on the road again. I hope it isn't the pump because I just replaced it 1 month ago. Thank you for your time and getting back with me on this matter, Cody.

Answer
If possible I would check the fuel pressure with a gauge when the jeep acts up.  If the pressure is low try replacing the filter, then the fuel pump if necessary.  The pump should have a warranty if its a month old.  I have also seen converters stop up and cause the vehicle not to run good, but it sounds more like a fuel problem to me!  Hope I could help you!
