Motorcycle Repair: 85 ignition, ft elevation, compression stroke

Question
QUESTION: HI Mike. I have 2 85 evos. An Fxrs, and an Fxrt. The rs has an s and s with the voes removed completely and points installed. It is a hard start if on the compression stroke. The rt is stock but has no spark. The coil is good, I have switched between the two, and im thinking the voes module might be bad. Both bikes i think are over carbed, the plugs are black. What would be a good ignition for both bikes to either replace or remove the voes? Also  Im at about 6500 ft elevation, what would be a good jet size in your opinion? 160? Thanks in advance for your time Rick

ANSWER: the bike that has no spark, do you have power to the coil?

QUESTION:  The power to the coil seems intermittent. I've checked and had nothing, I just checked again, and one side is hot. The last time I rode it, it died and backfired out the exhaust and was hard to start again. Finally it coasted to a stop and no power. Rick

Answer
If you have no power at the coil, then you have a wiring problem. On the hot side of the coil you should always have 12 volts when the ignition switch is on.
As to your jets. Before changing jets do a OHMs test on the coil and plug wires. If they are bad you will foul plugs. If you need to rejet go to the S&S web site and you will find a tech cheet on how to rejet and find the right jet.
Good luck and happy riding
