Jeep Repair: dimmer switch, jeep sahara, partial column

Question
Hello, dimmer arm on our 1992 jeep sahara no longer works. On High beam only. could the dimmer rod be diconnected, ? The part I have see in a catalog doesn't look like it would fit. Do I have to take the steering wheel off to repair? Any advice would be helpful.

Answer
This is another one that's kind of before my time.  By sahara I'm assuming you mean it's a CJ or wrangler body.  92 would put it back in the AMC/jeep era prior to Chrysler getting their hands on it.

I might have worked on one or two of these but I do beleive there is a rod connecting the stalk to the plunger style switch itself.  There's a couple of pieces in there that can break or move out of place after time and I think disassembly of the steering wheel and partial column disection is possible.

If you can find a Jeep dealer with some real old-school Jeep guys in there I'm sure they can give you a better answer.  I know two of the three or four jeep dealerships in my town have such experts who could tell you exactly what to do.

The down side is the age of your vehicle.  Most manufacturers only provide parts for about 10 years.  Again though, in the right hands the mechanic may be able to tell you how to get the parts you need.
