Land Rover Repair: timing chain/ components

Question
hi john! i have a 2004 range rover with just over 130k miles no problems really so far but just recently when i start the vehicle there is a knock in the engine then goes away in a couple of seconds. im a do it yourself kind of person and been around vehicles all my life, but a land rover is foreign to me. would this be something dealing with the timing chains and or tensioner? thanks so much for the help!

Answer
Knocking in a 2004 (assuming it is inside the motor, and not in the belt driven accessories or catalyst) is most often a result of excess piston skirt clearance.  There's no cure for that short of engine overhaul.  I've been down this road many times before.  Once you eliminate the external causes that is usually what remains.  I have some articles dealing with this topic on my blog, http://robisonservice.blogspot.com
