Land Rover Repair: 1996 Land Rover Discovery overheat, land rover discovery, fan clutch

Question
I have a 96 land rover discovery and it runs hot. My temp gauge is always 3/4 of the way up, but doesn't overheat (or go into the red) and it seems like it's holding fluid. I've already replaced the thermostat but still runs hot.

Answer
If the temperature gauge is consistently at 3/4, as opposed to rising up and down, I would suspect the accuracy of the gauge. The problem with that is that the measuring tools in shops vary quite a bit so there is no absolute answer I can give you here.  If that car were in our shop I'd shoot several points on that engine and compare immediately to another similar model in the shop.  That would tell the story.

If it's not really hot, you can just recognize that the 3/4 reading is normal for your car.  If it is hot, you can proceed through the list . . . fan clutch, radiator are the first stops.
