Land Rover Repair: 96 Land Rover Discovery differential binding, differential failure, axle failure

Question
When backing up or going forward in a tight turn it feels like the front differential is binding up and then it drops and feels like it is dropping from underneath the vehicle. I layed underneath the disc on a creeper and watched the drain plug and as it was backing up it was like the diff was twisting more on whatever side it was turning. Then it would let loose and would drop 4 or 5 inches. I have replaced right side CV joint and there is no problems with any parts on front end. Any help with this matter would be appreciated. Thanks

Answer
It sounds like the differential is broken inside.  That's sort of common on that model. You can either change the differential or swap the whole front axle assembly for a used part.  With exchange differentials costing about $1400 last time I checked many people choose the used axle assembly route.
