Land Rover Repair: Automatic Gearbox Fault, inhibitor switch, service engine soon light

Question
I have a 1999 Discover II and the M & S lights are flashing on the dash while driving.  Also, my Service Engine Soon light and Brake lights will not go out.  I've been told it's a simple fix.  Is it, can I replace the automatic Gearbox without replacing the entire engine?  It still runs and drives great but am I pushing my luck driving it now?

Answer
Hi Will,

could be a water ingress problem.  Water has been known (by LR and LR owners) to enter the gearbox starter inhibitor switch connector and can cause this problem.  The fix is to install a new switch and harness connector.  The other two lights are related to this same problem...you may not have to replace the gearbox.  I'd get this fixed quickly and it should not be too expensive ... well... compared to most LR dealer repairs, that is.

There may be other causes but this is the problem that first came to my mind.

Best wishes for 2010,
