How can you tell if you need to replace the wheel bearing in a land rover?  Also, is a land rover really different from other cars so that only people familiar with land rovers should service them?  

Answer
If the wheel bearings are bad you will get ABS fault codes - the ABS warning will be lit - or you will hear a distinct growl or whine when turning one way or the other. And in terms of service - a Land Rover is not different from any car, in that it should be serviced by competent trained people.

Knowledge of Chevrolets, for example, does not qualify you to fix Rovers.  Knowledge of Rovers does not qualify you to fix Hondas.  Each car has its quirks and specialized tips and tricks.  You're wise to fines someone with experience on yoru make, whatever it is.
