Land Rover Repair: Fan Belt Tensioner, internal spring, belt tensioner

Question
I have a 2003 Discovery and the belt started a whining sound like it was loose.  Before I got home it started to over heat and actually blew a hose.  I replaced the hose,, but how does the tensioner work on this thing.  I have always had a easy time with my old cars, but this is stumping me.  Could it also be something other than the belt (Which was replaced only 2 years ago)?  Water pump?

Answer
The belt tensioner does not cause overheating unless the belt actually comes off.  If the belt is correctly installed and the truck overheats you need to look elsewhere for the cause.  The tensiner is automatic; that is, an internal spring holds the belt tight all by itself.  There is nothing to adjust

Good luck with it
