Land Rover Repair: Discovery 95 popping thru intake under load, vacuum advance, allen screw

Question
My wife has a 95 Discovery 3.9 (obd1) and when driving the distributor vacuum advance fell off. Vehicle was towed to generic auto repair shop that "messed with the timing and mixture to make run" and referred her to a dealer (they didn't notice the vacuum advance hanging off ?!?!) So I replaced distributor with "good used" and set base timing. Now it idles ok and revs off load ok (not great, but ok-little rough) but coughs thru intake under load. Tried adjusting the allen screw next to the throttle body, and it changes where in the rpm range it pops (with adjustments I can make it pop off load, so I think I am on the right track) but cannot make it run right.
It ran good before the advance fell off, what else could the hack that made it run messed with?
Frustrated as she loves her Disco, but I cant seem to fix it...
HELP!

Answer
Hi Russ,

I understand where you are coming from.  My wife too loves her '95 and I'm always given that 'look' when I say, "here, let me take a look at that" when I go near HER Disco.

My advice, find a local independent LR mechanic who has the testbook and let them fix it fast.  There is no way of knowing what component the local mechanic touched.  It could take you awhile to find the problem and I wonder if its easier to have an expert fix it with the Testbook at hand.I say this in all sincerity (and experience).  If it was my car, I'd be concerned with the timing and such but its my wife's vehicle and she just want's it fixed.  now.   ;)

Send me an email telling me where you'd like it repaired and I'll try to find an LR indie shop for you.

Regards,

JohnMc
