Land Rover Repair: 2005 Freelander, land rover dealer, competent service

Question
My Freelander has been a bit hit and miss on starting. I get in it, turn the key, it goes click. However, if I fully depress the gas pedal and then turn the key, 9 times out of 10 it will start. It has been regularly maintained by a Land Rover dealer and the battery was recently replaced (one month ago). It is currently at the dealer and they are telling me the starter is the problem. Of course, they told me earlier it was the battery thus the reason the battery is so new. Does the information they are giving me sound right? Also, what does a starter run? They are quoting me around $900 for the part and labor. I am a single female and just want to make sure I am not getting ripped off. Thanks for your help.

Answer
$900 sounds high for a starter in a Freelander, but competent service is hard to find and I hesitate to choose a service provider on the basis of cost.  In the car world, low cost usually equals low quality.

The starter could be the problem.  The only way to know is to test it when it's actually malfunctioning.
