Land Rover Repair: 2004 Land Rover Discovery shifter lever clunk, land rover discovery, 2004 land rover discovery

Question
I have a 2004 Land Rover Discovery SE with 55K miles.  Just got it back from the dealership for other reasons, but now when I press the brake pedal, there is a "clunk" sound that seems like it's coming from inside the shift lever at the same time as I push the pedal.  It only does it when I'm in "Park" before I move the lever.  I can feel something clunking inside the shift lever when I depress the brake pedal.

Any ideas?

Answer
It sounds like you are hearing the solenoid that allows you to shift out of park only when the brake is pressed and the key is on.  That solenoid serves two purposes.  First it prevents a thief from shifting your car into neutral to roll it away without a key.  Second, it prevents accidentally putting the running car in gear when the brake is off.

That solenoid has always been there.  Perhaps you just noticed it today, or maybe it got louder.  It's not clear that you have a service issue, though.
