Land Rover Repair: transmisson, manual gearboxes, filler plug

Question
How do I check the transmisson fluid ,and if I need to change or add where do I do that at. Also there are times the car doesnot want to come out of park and go in gear ,but after playing with it ,it always does, what could the problem be.

On pre-1999 automotic transmissions there is a dipstick under the hood; levle is checked cold.  On newer automatics the level is checked by removing the fill plug on the side of the gearbox and topping fluid till the excess runs out with the vehicle running level on a lift.  Manual gearboxes are filled to the level of the filler plug from beneath
