Land Rover Repair: 1998 Landrover Discovery hot running problem, engine parameters, t4 test

Question
John,
My 98 Disco SFI GEMS 4.0 Starts and runs fine for approximately 10 minutes. After that time the engine will idle but the throttle cannot be opened without the engine going into convultions. I suspect a broken trace in the ecu that seperates when the module comes up to temperature not allowing the engine to run at high rpms (above 1500). Engine runs at normal temperature. After an hour of cooling, the engine starts and runs well (with the exception of P1313 and P1314). Before this symptom developed, the vehicle would faulter at highway speeds (shuttering violently). Letting off on the gas pedal would stop the shutter. If you have any wisdom on this one, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

Part trail is as follows.

New VSS
New TPS
New CTS
Used MAF

Best regards

Mark Quintel

Answer
That's why they make sophisticated test systems - so we don't guess and waste money.  What I would do is connect our T4 test system and put it on the live data screen, where it shows all the engine parameters and highlights any that go out of the normal range.  I'd drive it and see what story it tells, and act accordingly.

If you do not have access to a T4, or Autologic system I suggest searching out a properly qualified LR specialist that does.  Otherwise, throwing parts in hopes of a solution will be very expensive.

Your idea of a broken trace in the engine controller is very improbable based on my experience.  Furthermore, if you unplug the engine controller and then crank the car, you may lose the security synchronization and you won't be able to subsequently start the vehicle without the aforementioned testers to realign the security.
