Land Rover Repair: 1992 Disco1 3.5L v8 vibration, toilet cistern, vacuum line

Question
John,
the disco starts shuddering at 2500 rpm and then it stops at 3000rpm. I have changed the plugs, rotor, dizzy cap and leads (all were pretty old anyway) and still the vibration persists. Power is OK, engine shudders even when vehicle at rest, gear box disengaged.

Not sure if the below loose tube may be causing the problem.
I have found a loose air tube , same diameter as the tube going from the plenum to the dizzy (advance retard vacuum tube I think). The tube starts at a round black ball, looks like the old fashioned toilet cistern floats, except it has 2 tubes going into it. The loose end was lying on top of the V of the engine, not sure where it plugs into and I cannot find any openings any ideas?

Answer
I'm sorry but I can't help with the vacuum line mystery.  We don't have that setup here in the USA.  You'll need a local LR shop manual for your market.  What you see may be a vacuum accumulator for the lines into the vehicle.  Early 90s US Rovers don't have them but other cars like Mercedes do.

I do not think a small vacuum hose leak would account for a shudder at 2,500 but you never know. I have seen coils break down on those cars and cause symptoms like you describe.  It's also possible there is a fuel injection issue.

When you get a workshop manual it has a test procedure for the 13/14cux fuel injection that only requires hand tools and a multimeter.

Those would be my next stops.

Did you know I also have a car blog?
