Land Rover Repair: 2000 Disco II Cruise Control, land rover specialists, land rover dealer

Question
Hi, John:  About four years ago, the cruise control in my 2000 Disco II "SD" stopped functioning.  I bought the car in April, 2002, from the Land Rover dealer in Tacoma, WA, as an original lease return with 21,000 miles (so, I know it was appropriately maintained), and we've kept current with both regular owner and dealer warranty maintenance.

Unfortunately, this problem surfaced after expiration of the extended warranty, and the dealership wanted a $1,000 up front payment to run diagnostics.  I decided this was way too expensive because other than the cruise control, the vehicle has continued to operate normally.  Freeway gas mileage is 20-21 MPG, with in-town of 17-18, and the current original engine mileage is only 98,900.

Your thoughts and opinions will be greatly appreciated!!  Many thanks!!

Answer
I think you need to find a different service facility.  Qualified Land Rover specialists are rare; but diagnosis of your cruise control should not take more than a few hours.  I don't think a $1,000 up front payment is appropriate in that circumstance.  I could see it if they had to order costly non-returnable parts, but most cruise problems are broken hoses, switches, and wiring . . . relatively cheap stuff.
