Land Rover Repair: replacing coil pack on 01 discovery, land rover discovery, coil pack

Question
I was curious about the best way to replace a bad coil pack on my 2001 land rover discovery. The dealer said that was the problem, but wanted $600 in labor to do the job. I guess my question is what am I getting myself into? I have a good mechanical background but have never messed with this vehicle.

Answer
To reach the coil pack you have to move the ac compressor out of the way, remove the alternator and all the stuff in front, remove the air intake and then the plenum, and then you can get at it.  The job is about 4 hours.

There is no special trick; it's just quite a bit of labor.  When you pull the plenum I'd certaily replace the plug wires, and if the valve covers leak, replace those gaskets too as the same stuff has to come off for access to them.

good luck with it
