Land Rover Repair: Defender Fuel sediment drainage system, land rover dealers, drainage system

Question
Dear Mr John ,

Got a defender 90 SW TD5 ,  reaching 56 000 km the fuel filter plug separator broked in two parts , let the fuel dripping and therefore prevented the car to work.Have delivered it to the Land Rover agent to fix it and reaching 66 000  km the same occurred while on a parking place , broke in two parts again and adjusted without explanation from the land rover dealers . The fuel sedimenter is normally drained every 10 000.00 KM when the car get serviced. My first comments would have been that the spare parts fixed by the dealer was defective .

Thank you for guiding me in the assessment as I go regularly off road .

Thanking you in advance ,

Olivier

Answer
Hi Olivier,

yes it is abnormal for this part to fail in the same place.  I wonder if there is another cause besides defective parts.  Are the lines loose?  Most problems are with the lift pump and the filter itself seems very stable.  Is it possible that the repair was done improperly?

When I first bought our Discovery, I had some terrible experiences with dealership repairs, far worse than broken fuel filter plugs.  It was not until later that an experienced LR mechanic began to work solely on my vehicle.  I would insist only having 'Mike' take care of my Disco as he was/is a professional.  Perhaps you had a novice mechanic do the installation and it was not done correctly.  Maybe that's why the dealership did the repair and gave no explaination.

Regards,

JohnMc
