Land Rover Repair: swivel pin housing oil and large bolt ?, nylon washer, oil leaks

Question
Hi John,
my name is malcolm ive purchased a 1993 build date disco
im not sure what oil to use in the swivel pin and i did'nt even know you could replace oil in them.this is the first land rover i have owned.also there is a large bolt with a kind of corky looking seal around it .its between gear box and transfer case at bottom its a goldish colour and a smaller one close bye with a nylon washer on an angle  i thought these would be drain plugs for gear box or transfer case but i can see the drain plugs for them.the smaller bolt is about a 14mm with nylon washer and the bigger is about 24mm with a cork type washer.regards malcolm.

Answer
Hi Malcolm,

LR dealer will have swivel pin lub and its usually reasonably priced.  Stuff is thicker than toothpaste and made specially for this.  Switch to this and (theoretically) it will not leak.

Sounds like the TG gearbox gasket you are describing.  Take it from me, if you can avoid touching this large gasket, do so.  I replaced mine once and it leaked for months...no matter how I tried to fix it.  It's a real pain in the ___

Drain plug is on bottom and fill plug on the side.  Copper is usually the washer for the drain plug.  Fill until the gear oil leaks out the fill hole (so long as you are on level ground).

Best of luck,
