Land Rover Repair: 98 Disco ran out of fuel; wont start, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump relay

Question
i have a 98 discovery i let my friend drive it it ran out of gas now it will not crank. i filled the gas tank up and fuel injector cleaner.. open the hood hit the button to make the fuel flow and nothing happens. do i need a whole new fuel pump or what do u think

Answer
Hi Natalie,

Is that the fuel cutoff switch that you engaged?  Usually, that switch is engaged when there is a front end collision and the system then automatically cuts of the fuel feed.  To re-activate fuel feed, the fuel cut off switch has to be pressed. This switch is located in the engine compartment on the firewall (back panel, behind engine).

Is this the switch you touched?

May not be the fuel pump.  Disconnect the battery negative cable, wait a few seconds then reconnect.  Turn key on but don't engage engine.  This should test the ems and start the fuel pump relay.  After a few seconds, try to start your engine.

Another suggestion I was given was to depressurize your fuel line and injectors.  By removing the fuel pressure regulator and reattaching, you'll prime the fuel system properly.

Best of luck,

NB:  don't let your friend use your vehicles.
