Land Rover Repair: 97 Land Rover Disco, loud bangs, heavy fluid

Question
I have a slowly leaking steering pump hose. I checked the level regularly, kept it properly filled. One extremely cold morning, said pump began to wail end moan rather loudly and steering was heavy. Fluid was foamy and pink. That settled down within an hour and things returned to normal. I nursed it for several months, always keeping the fluid level in the proper range. Then, more recently, I heard several loud bangs in quick succession (similar to an object in the fan blades) during a slight right turn. Then, almost daily, a single, loud, clunking noise during a similar turn, never left. Upon checking steering fluid level, found it higher than when I previously checked two days before. Steering pump is still noisy. Are these issues related? Did one cause the other? Are the noises a steering problem or possibly drive train related? Please offer some words of wisdom. Thanks

Answer
My guess is that the banging indicates a problem in the differential or the front u-joints, and it's separate from the steering hose leak.

I'd guess the "higher level" is a false alarm.

But that's just my general experience.  Your car may be different.
