Land Rover Repair: 1996 land rover discovery, land rover discovery, oil leaks

Question
Hi i have owned a 1996 disco 3.9 petrol v8 for about eight years with vitually trouble free motoring over 320,000 ks except for the usual oil leaks etc. The rear electric windows have from day 1 refused to operate until the car had been moving for about 15 minutes and then would work fine. Stop the car and drive off and the same delay time happens again and this has been consistent for all those years. In the past week they now refuse to work at all regardless of time .
Any ideas you may have would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards Alan.

Answer
Hi Alan,

you're so fortunate to have owned a Disco I with so few problems and I hope this one is the only one you'll know.

As you may know, window and door lock problems are very common on Disco's.  There is also a serious water leakage problem that can affect the fusebox and important control modules up under the dash.  For example, the IDM contacts can corrode and thus short out.  Maybe (BIG GUESS HERE) the delay was the time it took for any moisture to dry before the windows could work.  Perhaps its gone beyond that now and the corrosion has affected the fusebox.  Solution is usually to replace the fusebox.

Other than that, it could be security related and again some components can corrode and short out.

You'll have to probe the fusebox and relays to make sure no water is getting in there OR no corrosion is evident.  Tight spot to work with a flashlight but its better than having the dealer charge thru the nose to do this.

Best of luck,

Consult your RAVE CD to locate the connections.  IF you don't have one, send me an email and I'll see what I can do.
