Land Rover Repair: no start, brake light switch, whirr

Question
Hi Nigel,
I have a 2004 LR Discovery. When I turn the key in the ignition the engine does not turn over. All the idiot lights come on, the headlights, wipers, radio etc. work. I attempted a jump start still no engine turn over. When I turn the key I do hear a single click and when I return the key to the off position I hear a faint whirr or hum which I suppose could be the starter motor winding down. Also with the brake peddle depressed I tried to move the gear shift to neutral but the shifter won't come out of park. This isn't normal is it? Could it be related?

Thanks,
Ed

Answer
If the ignition is switched on to position 2, you should be able to shift the car, with the brake pedal depressed, assuming that your battery is good and all connections to it are good.  If you have checked the battery and you still can't get the car to shift, you may need a brake light switch.  Also, you would probably need a starter if the battery and connections test fine.

If you are trying to jump start the car, make sure you are using good cables.  Cheap cables frequently fail.
