Land Rover Repair: Series 11a hopping, series 11a, clonk

Question
1971 Series 11a, when I accelerate it seems as if the acceleration cuts out momentarily then kicks in again making us bunny hop along with alarming clonks! Happens in all gears and at all revs. There is no kick back on the clutch or any jerking on the gear shift, the clonk sounds like it is coming from the axle... Any ideas would be appreciated! Many thanks, Sue.

Answer
It sounds like you have a petrol engine.  The cutting out is either a carburetor problem or an ignition system problem.  There is no way for me to tell you anything more specific without more detail.

The clonking noise in the driveline is very common in these cars when you have the "bunny hop" effect of the engine.  If you get the engine running smoothly, you will probably find the driveline noise will be cured as well.
