Land Rover Repair: 96 renge rover fuel pump, airtex fuel pump, renge rover

Question
QUESTION: hey nigel another question
on most of the pictures of the replacement fuel pumps don't have a second outlet on the fuel pump it self like the one on my RR that connects to the non-return valve on the other replacement fuel pumps the non-return valve is connected to the return fuel line and not directly to the fuel pump. can i eliminate the non-return valve that is connected to the fuel pump of my RR so i will be able to install a generic airtex fuel pump (what's the purpose of the non return valve connected directly to my fuel pump)the return fuel line drops direct into the fuel tank
I'm not a mechanic but i like to work on my cars to save the high cost for mechanic repairs
thank you for taking the time to help me

ANSWER: No, you cannot eliminate the return.  You just need to get the right fuel pump.

QUESTION: well i went to the dealer and seen the new pump (complete assembly) that will replace the one on my RR and the fuel  pump it self does not have the second outlet for the non-return valve on the pump like the one on my junk mobile
the return valve is connected directly at the end of the return fuel line from the engine
i used the wrong words on the last question the right question is can i relocate the none return valve to the end of the return fuel line like the new unit have it. just want to save the $380.00for the hole unit if not possible i will just buy the new one
how do i reset the base idle after i put it back together
Nigel once again i thank you for taking the time to help me

Answer
Hi Jose,

It sounds like the dealer showed you the wrong pump.  The fuel pump for 1999-2002 Range Rovers do not have a fuel return.  All previous systems, have a fuel return, which is necessary for the function of those cars.  You will have to get the right one for your car.  The part number should be STC4344.

The only real way to set the base idle is with a factory scan tool.  If you want to try to play with it, however, you can remove the blanking plug from the throttle body and unscrew the Allen key one or two turns.

Good luck!
