Land Rover Repair: Re: 2000 Landrover Disco II - CV Joint/Drive Train Failure, catastrophic failure, transmission case

Question
Our 2000 Disco II experienced a "catastrophic" failure of the CV joint. The CV joint failed, the drive train in the right side came loose and punctured the transmission case.

We do not drive this off road...all street driving....always have had this car maintained by certified techs etc.  Anyway, have you heard anything like this?  Do we need to replace the entire transmission if the transmission case is only cracked?  any other advice on such a problem

Answer
The double u-joint in the front driveshaft is "permanently lubricated" so there is nothign to service, and when they fail, your problem is often the result.

In the future, I suggest you take down the driveshaft at your 30k services and check for tightness in the joints.  That's your only giveaway of a problem.

As to repair . . . here at Robison Service we'd probably fit a used transmission and a new driveshaft.  We get 5-6 of those jobs shipped to us every year
