Land Rover Repair: 1996 rangerover 4.6 transmission problem, fault message, microswitches

Question
I have a 1996 RR 4.6 that has served faithfully since new with no major service issues until now.  Yesterday I went to drive the truck and this is what happened. I started it as normal and reversed out the driveway and proceeded to put it into drive and the engine just raced with no forward motion. the truck will only move when reverse is selected. the mode button will not select sport either. When I turn off the truck I get a gearbox fault message. Any ideas?

Answer
this could be a number of things.

Low battery power will cause problems with all the computers, the transmission computer seems to be the touchiest.

There is a switch on the side of the transmission called the XYZ switch (3 microswitches to give a signal of which gear is selected), failure of this switch will cause problems.

It could also be an actual internal problem.

When you first start up does the dashboard display the selected gears as you change positions?  Is your battery in good shape, you can have it tested at any auto-parts store, the correct battery is an Interstate, go to them for the correct one if your battery is due for replacement.
