Land Rover Repair: 03 Disco Brake caliper, brake caliper, anchor point

Question
I recently replaced the rear brake pads on my 2003 Disco without any problems.  When I went to do the same on my front pads, however, I had some difficulty.  First, I had a hard time getting the caliper bolts loosened.  Then, once I took out the bolts I could not get the left front caliper off the rotor.  Also, I did not have the right tool to compress the dual pistons.  Any suggestions on how to remove the caliper and what to use for the pistons?  Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi Glen,

loctite is used on the caliper bolts.  You'll need a long handled ratchet to apply the right torque.  You could try heating the bolt next time.  I have a small torch I use (its for decorating cakes believe it or not).

As for the caliper being difficult to remove, you have to compress those pistons first. Even just a little.  Maybe a large C clamp would suffice.  I have used a block of hardwood and a hammer to 'negotiate' my caliper away from the disc.  Tapping the wood against the caliper has helped me in the past.

Don't use lubricants around the calipers.  Best to use some careful taps all around the anchor point (bolt hole area).

I can understand why the front was more difficult than the rear, that's were most of the action ( and weight) is.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
