Land Rover Repair: 03 discovery engine swap, crankshaft sensor, discovery engine

Question
Hey Nigel i have a 2003 discovery se with a hole in the block. i want to put in a short block but i do not want an 2003-2004. can i swap in a better year for land rovers? maybe a 1999 range rover block

Answer
I don't think there are any major reliability differences between the old and new blocks.  The '03/'04 engines had oil pump problems until the manufacturing defect was uncovered, but the blocks were always fine.

If you do choose to go with a 95-99 Range Rover block, you will need to change the crankshaft sensor pickup plate.
