Land Rover Repair: tie rods, radius arm bushings, welding torch

Question
i have a 2000 discovery that "clunks" when i make turns or hit bumps. ive read in many sites that the problem is most likely the tie rod ends. if thats the case then how would i replace them. they seem pretty easy but i just want to be sure before i start and then mess something up. thanks for your help!!

Answer
It is possible that your tie rod ends are worn, but most of the time with these cars, it is a worn steering box.  You can also check the panhard rod and radius arm bushings.

It is sometimes quite a taxing job to replace the tie rod ends because they can be rusted into the tie rod or the drag links.  If it is stuck, you need to use considerable heat, e.g. a welding torch, to remove it.  If you wish to replace the tie rod ends, you need a tie rod end removal tool, i.e. a pickling fork or a tie rod end press.  Make sure you count the number of times you unwind the old unit and make sure you wind in the new unit the same number of times.
