Land Rover Repair: Transmission in a Freelander, land rover freelander, filler plug

Question
I have a Land Rover Freelander 2001. My gears seem like they are clunking and sometimes it feels like it hasn't changed gears at all. It it an automatic. I want to check the level of the transmission fluid and top it up if needed but I can't seem to find it. Neither could my mechanic! Is there a dipstick? Because we could only find one for the oil. We did find something that looked like it could have been for the transmission but it didn't have a dipstick. It just had a rubber plug. (maybe previous owner lost it and replaced with a plug??) PLEEEEASE HELP

Answer
To check the transmission fluid level , you must remove the allen plug on the bottom of the transmission, next to the gear selector cable.  On the early units, the filler plug is a rubber stopper on the very top of the transmission, which needs to be removed.  On the later units, the filler plug is a 14mm hexagonal plug, which needs to be removed.

The transmission needs to be filled at a temperature between 35-40 degrees celsius, whilst the engine is running, until the fluid dribbles out of the level plug from the bottom of the transmission.

I rather suspect that your problem is a bit more than just a low fluid level.

Best of luck.
