Land Rover Repair: 1996 Range Rover Rear Doors wont unlock, salvage yard, rear doors

Question
Hi my 1995 Range Rover 4.6 HSE rear doors will not unlock, my mechanic seems to think there is a fault with the BeCM and the repair is expensive whereas I have a basic eloctronics background and I am an electrician by trade so I am willing to attempt a repair myself as I have the manual with schematics, I would appreciate your diagnostic first though. The door lock can be heard engaging when the doors are locked but no sound on unlocking and manual unlocking via the catch and handles does not work either.  Is there a way of opening the rear doors also? Thanks any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Ian,

I had similar trouble with my '95 Disco.  The first repair I did was to attempt to adjust the locking mechanism and perform a through cleaning and lubrication.  This lasted almost a year before the problem returned.  I then replaced the lock actuators with ones I purchased from a salvage yard.  The price was right and they lasted for several years - that is until the body control module finally failed.

If you are interested in less expensive salvaged parts, try the following website:  www.car-part.com   If you make a $30 purchase and it solves your problem then all is well.  If the purchase proves not to solve the problem, you still prevented yourself from paying $120 to the parts dept. of a dealership AND you still have a spare part.  Same goes for the BeCM and most other parts.

Besides this, I'd make sure that the wiring and harness is working (continuity).  LR wiring has been know to fail due to corrosion.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
