Land Rover Repair: landrover discover automatic stuck in reverse, linkage problem, landrover discovery

landrover discovery v8 , r reg , automatic ,petrol/lpg .hi ,put the car into reverse , it made a bit of a clunk at the time , then i reversed to let a passer by and now it is stuck in reverse . it will not budge out of gear , i have now turned off the engine but of course it will not start now unless is can go back into neutral . please help asap , have an airport run next weekend !  regards kerry

It is very unlikley that you have a transmission problem.  You almost certainly have a linkage problem.

The connection between the gearshift lever and the gear is via a cable.  I'd guess that the cable has kinked and you now need a new one.

Replacement requires removal of much of the center console, and you need a lift or some way  to work under the car.  It's a 2-3 hour job for a Land Rover tech - not techically challenging but time consuming.

You can go under the car and unhook the shift cable.  Then you can shift by rotating the lever on the gearbox.  That will allow you to drive into position for repair.
