Land Rover Repair: 1997 Discovery 1, 3.9 V8i, fuel pressure regulator, fuel leaks

Question
Hi Nigel, my last question was interupted by system problem, so I hope I am not sending same question twice!! I have recently purchased above vehicle, old, well used, but still in great condition despite 165,000kms. Engine runs wonderfully after new fuel pump, leads & plugs, but oh, the consumption. I am lucky to get 3 kms per litre.(No obvious fuel leaks!) Is this what I must expect or do you have any suggestions??

Answer
It sounds like you are getting about 50% of normal mileage.  A very common cause of reduced mileage is the vacuum hose to the fuel pressure regulator has perished and should be replaced.  Other casuse can be blocked exhaust, blocked catalytic converters, leaking injectors.  Of course, the simplest place to start is a clean air filter and proper tire pressures.
