Land Rover Repair: fuel injectors and floor rust, screw fittings, plastic screw

Question
John
Thanks for the info. Why does a company that has such a "good" rep have such a lousy time with rust?!? Their moto is best 4X4 by far? I have tried to find where the "leaks" are coming from and I have found a couple of suspects and one obvious problem. It seems that I have 2 holes that wore through the wheel well (my gosh this vehicle is only 10 years old!) another bit more elusive is coming from behind the instrument panel. A very slight drip coming from way up past the wiring, I cant get my head past the break pedal to see exactly where.
And another more healthy one coming from just below where the dash mounts to the side panel near the hood release. There is a small hole that goes through the first layer of panel. This hole has a plastic fitting on it almost looks like the white plastic screw fittings that go through the floor where the runnig board panel is held dowm. Anyway there is nothing in this "fitting" just water dripping out of it anytime it rains or I wash the vehicle. Any idea how the water is getting into this inner panel from outside?

I have removed the fuel rail and found rust. I want to replace the rail but find it incredible that such a simply made item can cost $340 can you suggest a source for reasonable/refurbished parts? Also do I really need to replace ALL injectors? Can they not be reworked?

I have floor rust under the driver seat. This seems to be cause by a hole rusted through the wheel well and water gathered on the floor. I want to weld in one from a recycle yard. Can you suggest one?

Hi Danny,

here's the website you need:

www.car-part.com

You'll find salvage yards from all over North America and close to home.  Many have LR parts.

As for the fuel rail, use the above site to locate and order a salvaged fuel rail.  If you're going to do this work, you might as well replace ALL the injectors.  Why take the chance.

As for the floor rust...you and me both!  My rust was not so bad that I had to replace the entire floor.  It ran only along the welds and I was able to cut out the rust and replace with 'alternative flooring'.

Again, the above website will locate the floor you've requested.

Best of luck,

JohnMc

"alternative flooring" came from a Buick.  I cut out what I needed and patched it in.  I grinded and wire-brushed the entire area and then covered everything in fibreglass.  I then sprayed rubberized undercoating as 'overkill'.

So far...so good.

Answer
Danny,

I know exactly where you are coming from. How does that other saying go " good from far but far from good!"  And then there are the dealers...

I've had to do the same work to my Disco.  Check inside the engine compartment for cracks and leaks, especially along the top of the engine firewall.  There is a long weld that runs the width of the engine compartment.  This can crack and separate.  ahhhh...fibreglass....it can do almost anything.

When you remove the carpets, you'll find rubber water plugs on the floor.  Mine were missing and this caused some rust trouble for me.  With fiberglass, I put a stop to that.  Made my own water plugs too!  Noticed the seat bolts were all rusted out so I replace them too.

Best of luck with the repairs and keep plenty of acetone on the side to clean your hands!

Regards,

JohnMc
